ISLAMIC, 'Abbasid Caliphate. temp. Al-Rashid, AH 170-193 / AD 786-809. Dirham (Silver, 26 mm, 2.75 g, 1 h), citing the governor Ali ibn Isa ibn Mahan as mawla, Balkh, AH 190 = AD 805/6. SICA III, 697. Extremely rare. Chipped on the edge and with some marks, otherwise, about extremely fine.

Ali ibn Isa ibn Mahan was a prominent military leader and governor of Khurasan under the caliph Harun al-Rashid. He is named 'mawla' on our coin, a word with different meanings such as 'leader', 'follower' and 'friend'.
